What are Stroopwafels?

Stroopwafels are probably the Netherlands' most popular sweet export, alongside Vla and liquorice. Stroopwafels are a traditional speciality from the Netherlands and would be called "syrup wafers" in German. The name says it all: the Stroopwafel consists of two round wafers. Between the two wafers of the Stroopwafel is a so-called Stroop, a caramel-like sugar-based syrup. If you don't try this combination, you're missing out. Lovers of sweet biscuits and caramel in particular will get their money's worth when eating Stroopwafels.

Stroopwafels have reached the German market. The typical syrup waffles from the Netherlands have found their way onto the shelves of many supermarkets. But beware: where it says Stroopwafel on the label, it is not always the real Dutch Stroopwafel inside. Many producers try to copy the Dutch Stroopwafel, which often fails in terms of flavour. The consistency and stickiness of the stroop is also an art in itself. At markets in large cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Maastricht and The Hague, you will find many Stroopwafel bakers who have mastered the art of making fresh Stroopwafels.

Where does the Stroopwafel actually come from?

The Stroopwafel has its origins, how could it be otherwise, in the Netherlands. In the city of Gouda, which is famous for its cheese. The first Stroopwafel was produced here in 1784 and served with tea or coffee from then on. A sweet change and soon very well-known and popular in the Netherlands. It was particularly useful to place the large Stroopwafel on teacups or mugs before eating it, so that it could be slightly warmed by the heat of the drink, so that the Stroop liquefied and became even tastier and creamier.

Stroopwafels in the Netherlands today

Even today - 200 years after the first Stroopwafel was baked - the delicious wafer biscuit is still made in many bakeries. In Dutch supermarkets, Stroopwafels are usually packaged in packs of 10.

According to tradition, the very first Stroopwafels were made from biscuit scraps and crumbs. Because they were so cheap, even poorer people could afford them. Nowadays, waffles are made from the standard ingredients of flour, sugar, butter and egg.

The syrup is made firmer - and therefore easier to spread - by adding butter. Instead of using ready-made syrup, you can also make your own mixture of sugar and butter (ratio 2 to 1).

Tip: If you like your Stroopwafel slightly warm with liquid Stroop, you can heat them up briefly in the microwave. Add a hot mug of Chocomel and a little cream and your little break from everyday life is ready - sooo delicious!
