Kruidnoten are traditionally eaten in the Netherlands during the Christmas season and distributed to children by Sinterklaas, the Dutch St. Nicholas. Kruidnoten are speculoos biscuits that have been refined with a hint of cinnamon. Just about everyone likes these little biscuits and they taste incredibly delicious with a nice cup of coffee, tea or hot Chocomel. Kruidnoten are delicious nibbling fun for the whole family.

In some German cities with Dutch influences, such as Emden, Potsdam or in the region around the former Dutch barracks base of Seedorf, Sinterklaas comes every year on 5 December and brings sweets for the children together with his helpers, the "zwarten Pieten". Traditionally, kruidnoten or old Dutch pepernnoten are then distributed to the children. Children especially love the biscuits, as kruidnoten have a particularly sweet taste and are in their mouths in one swoop.
