Pepernotes have a long tradition in the Netherlands and are baked and distributed every year by many families during the pre-Christmas period and especially at Sinterklaas.

What are these pepernotes and is the purchase worthwhile?
Pepernotes would be freely translated into German as "Pfeffernüsse". But the name is rather misleading, because the Dutch pepernotes have nothing to do with the pepper nuts available here. They do not taste like pepper!

Pepernotes are biscuits made from rye flour. The pepernotes get their unique taste from a little aniseed aroma. Pepernotes are so very different from German biscuits. So the Pepernoten have a relatively tough consistency and are taste-wise most likely in the category Lebkuchen to classify, although again completely differently. The addition of aniseed gives them their very own taste - here it is really worth testing yourself for a judgement.

We recommend pepernotes especially in the pre-Christmas period, as they bring out the typical Sinterklaas biscuit taste best. Pepernotes are also a great gift idea for Holland fans and friends of the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition.
