With Koopmans Oliebollen you can make a dough for the traditional Oliebollen from Holland in no time at all. Oliebollen are traditionally eaten in the Netherlands on New Year's Eve, Oudejaarsavond. Between Christmas and New Year's Day, the delicious balls are sold at many stalls outside supermarkets, at markets and in bakeries.

What are Oliebollen?

Oliebollen are a fried pastry from the Netherlands, similar to the yeast-based doughnuts known in this country. The dough is deep-fried and the Oliebollen are garnished with a little icing sugar.

Oliebollen are traditionally eaten on New Year's Eve in Holland. At fairs, Oliebollen can be bought all year round and are considered a real highlight there and a must for every visit to the market.

In some parts of Belgium, the doughnut-like oliebol is also called smoutebol. That's because they were previously baked in smout. An oliebol in Belgium is usually not filled. In the Netherlands, oliebollen are often sold filled.

How do you refine Oliebollen?

You can add whatever you like to the dough for the delicious Oliebollen. Sultanas are the most classic ingredient for refining the delicious dough balls. When you read "Krenten" in Holland, you are talking about small raisin-like fruits. These are sold as krentenbollen. If you don't like crent, you can also add a savoury flavour to your Oliebollen. This is a real insider tip and very tasty. With a little bacon, the otherwise sweet Oliebollen become savoury balls of dough. If you prefer your oliebol fruity, add a little apple or lemon.
